Age-related macular degeneration in Berlin (Charlottenburg)

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the most common causes of visual impairment in Germany. As the name suggests, this is a disease of the macula (yellow spot). The macula is a small area of the retina at the back of the eye that forms the centre of sharp vision. AMD causes a gradual loss of function in the cells located there.

This process is caused by metabolic deposits and excessive vascular growth beneath the macula. Affected patients then have difficulty focusing on objects. Blurred vision and loss of colour brightness and contrast are further symptoms of age-related macular degeneration. This chronic eye disease usually affects patients aged 50 and over and can vary greatly from person to person.

  • Increased risk from the age of 50

Please contact us if you suspect age-related macular degeneration, after a thorough examination at our renowned eye clinic in Berlin, we will be happy to advise you on your treatment options.

Dry and wet AMD

Age-related macular degeneration is divided into a dry and a wet variant. In over 85% of cases, it is dry AMD, which is usually associated with a mild or at least less severe course. Wet AMD, on the other hand, is normally associated with a severe course.

IVI treatment, laser treatment and photodynamic therapy are proven treatment methods for the wet form of AMD. There is no proven treatment for dry macular degeneration, but taking vitamins and minerals can reduce the risk of deterioration.

At our Berlin Eye Clinic, patients with retinal diseases can be examined using Spectralis® HRA (retinal angiography) and OCT (optical coherence tomography). Both procedures provide an excellent comprehensive diagnostic assessment of the retina. The unique ‘blue laser autofluorescence’, known as ‘Bluepeak’, enables non-invasive examination of the retina and thus provides the basis for continuous observation and future treatment methods for dry AMD.
