IVI treatment at Berlin Eye Clinic (Charlottenburg)

Pathological changes in the retina and vitreous body cause rapid, severe and usually irreversible deterioration of vision. In this context, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy and macular oedema, for example following retinal vascular occlusion, are particularly noteworthy.

In such retinal diseases, intravitreal injection (IVI)  of medication into the vitreous cavity can help. In IVI treatment, the vitreous cavity of the eye acts as a medication reservoir. The medications consist of antibodies that act against specific proteins in the vascular system that are responsible for the development of pathological new blood vessels. Such drugs are also known as vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF), or VEGF inhibitors for short.

Intravitreal drug delivery

  • Surgical administration of drugs
  • The vitreous cavity acts as a drug reservoir
  • Antibodies against specific proteins in the vascular system (VEGF inhibitors)

Please contact us if you are experiencing deterioration in your vision, at our modern eye clinic in Berlin, we will investigate the causes and immediately initiate a personalised, targeted treatment plan.

IVI: Treatment procedure

The procedure is performed in a sterile operating theatre and can be carried out under local anaesthetic within a few minutes. A very fine cannula is used to inject the medication (VEGF inhibitor) into the vitreous cavity in the anterior scleral region. The puncture channel through the eye envelope is so small that it closes immediately after the needle is removed. The medication administered does not pose any risk of visual impairment.

We then apply an eye bandage, which is worn for about four hours. The treatment is checked at the end of the injection and again in the following days by your eye surgeon in Berlin (Charlottenburg). Over several weeks, the injected medication continuously releases some of its active ingredient into the retina and choroid, preventing the growth of leaky blood vessels and reducing fluid accumulation in and under the retina.

This leads to stabilisation and, in rare cases, improved vision. As the drugs are made up of proteins, their effect is temporary. Therefore, repeated injections at regular intervals may be necessary, for example in cases of wet macular degeneration.
